Marble Boat

September 2010
The marble boat at the Summer Palace. An old Chinese saying says, "water can carry the boat as well as overturn it." It symbolizes the common people holding up the boat (holding up the Chinese emperor), or sinking it. The boat has many names including 青烟放 - meaning 'Boat of Clearness and Comfort.'

Contemplation

August 2010
On our first day in Laos, Katie and I climbed to the top of a hill to see the famous temple there. This young monk was sitting so perfectly on a balcony that I couldn't help but take a picture. I tried to be sneaky about it because I felt bad, but he didn't seem to mind. Over in the corner, just out of the picture, is the famous imprint of Buddha's foot.

Summer Palace Boat

September 2010
On a gorgeous day my study abroad program took us all to visit the Summer Palace, just outside of Beijing. It was built for the royal family to stay there during the summers. Since it is by a big manmade lake, it is much cooler there than the Forbidden City in the warm summer months.
